Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin bonded to your natural teeth. They minimize the appearance of visible imperfections, allowing you to achieve a healthy, attractive smile.

It’s possible to get only one or two veneers, but most people get between six and eight. Veneers are typically applied to the front teeth in your upper arch.

What issues can veneers correct?

At the Orlando Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Marcano and the team use veneers to correct various imperfections, including:

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Stains and discoloration that don’t respond to whitening
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Pointed or unusually shaped teeth

You might also benefit from veneers if your teeth are smaller-than-average.

What does getting veneers involve?

Getting veneers typically requires two appointments spaced a week or two apart.

At your initial consultation, Dr. Marcano conducts an oral exam, reviews your dental health history, and asks about your treatment goals.

He then takes X-rays to assess the health of your tooth roots, gums, and jaw. If you have crooked teeth, cavities, or gum disease, Dr. Marcano might recommend addressing these issues before moving forward.

If your X-rays come back satisfactory, Dr. Marcano administers a local anesthetic and prepares your teeth to receive veneers. To do this, he shaves a thin layer of enamel from each tooth.

After preparing your teeth, Dr. Marcano takes a series of digital impressions. He sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that creates your custom veneers.

About a week later, you visit the Orlando Center for Cosmetic Dentistry for your second appointment. Dr. Marcano lines up your veneers and bonds them to your teeth with dental cement. Afterward, he trims any excess material, polishes your teeth, and assesses your bite.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers typically last 10-15 years. To ensure yours stay in optimal condition, Dr. Marcano recommends brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and visiting the office every six months for an oral exam and professional cleaning.

To prevent chips, cracks, or other damage, avoid bad habits like nail-biting, chewing on ice, and opening objects with your teeth.
